3 EC directive to Ministry of External Affairs to provide foreign citizenship information of candidates

The Election Commission (EC) has directed the Ministry of External Affairs to provide the foreign citizenship information of independent candidate of Faridpur-3 seat, businessman AK Azad, Awami League nominated candidate for the same seat, Shamim Haque and Awami League nominated candidate for Barisal-4 seat, Shammi Ahmed.

According to EC sources, the EC has given such instructions to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through a letter. In this case, the agency has asked to collect information through the respective embassies.

Earlier, the EC directed the Ministry of External Affairs to provide details of the US citizenship and assets of Barisal-5 independent candidate Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah and his wife.

On December 8, the lawyer for AK Azad. Gholam Kibria filed an appeal in the Election Commission against Shamim Haque to cancel his candidature, alleging dual citizenship. Later that day Shamim Haque also filed an appeal against AK Azad against cancellation of candidature.

Awami League’s nominated candidate for Barisal-4 seat on December 4 due to dual citizenship and the party’s international affairs secretary. Shammi Ahmed’s nomination paper was canceled by the returning officer. Later he also appealed.

Although in the meantime to get back the candidacy. Shammi Ahmed has reportedly renounced his Australian citizenship.
