3 arrested in the case of setting fire to two trains

Three people have been arrested in connection with setting fire to Santahar and Jaipurhat railway stations in Bogra’s Adamdighi. Police said that two of them belong to Juba Dal and one belongs to Chhatra Dal.

Santahar Railway Police arrested them on Friday morning after raiding Joypurhat and Akkelpur upazilas.

The arrested are Taijul Islam (26) of Nishir Mor village of Joypurhat Sadar Upazila, Apu (24) of the same village and Abdul Momin (28) of Hastabsantpur Mohalla of Akkelpur town.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Santahar Railway Police Station Muktar Hossain said that after the Panchgarh-bound express train left Joypurhat station in the morning of December 4, the train was set on fire near Panchbib station. Passengers put out the train fire. It caused minor damage to the train compartment.

Then on December 15 at 11:30 pm, after the Parvatipur-bound Uttara Mail train left Jamalganj railway station, a compartment of the moving train was set on fire before reaching Joypurhat railway station. At that time, some seats of the train compartment were burnt. After reaching Joypurhat railway station, the fire service and the people of the railway station extinguished the fire.

In the two incidents, two separate cases were registered at the Santahar Railway Police Station. Railway police started operations in the field to catch the train saboteurs. Three people were arrested in a raid early Friday morning.

The OC also said that the arrests of two youth parties and one Chhatra party are related to politics. During the ongoing agitation, they admitted to police questioning that they had set fire to the train on the orders of the party’s top leaders. They are accused in the case.
