Over 200 Palestinians have been killed in 24 hours by Israeli attacks in war-torn Gaza. Yesterday, Saturday, Hamas authorities reported this information. According to news agency AFP, the attack comes amid US pressure on ally Israel to do something to protect civilians.
Despite calls for restraint and more aid to the Palestinians, Israel has shown no restraint in its 11-week long ‘Operation Swords of Iron’ campaign to destroy Hamas. The fighting is now centered on Gaza City and the southern city of Khan Younis. Both places are considered strongholds of the Palestinian independence armed group Hamas.
After reports of the latest Israeli strikes, gray and black smoke could be seen north of the coastal areas and in Khan Yunis. The refugee camp-turned-city is the birthplace of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, whom Israel holds most responsible for the October attacks.
Israeli Army Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi visited the soldiers’ position in Khan Yunis. He praised the troops for the efficiency of the operation.
Meanwhile, outside the morgue of Nasser Hospital in Gaza City, many Palestinians were seen praying for the last journey of their loved ones with tears in their eyes. Hamas authorities have said that more than 20,000 Palestinians have been killed in the war so far. More than 52,000 people were injured and 6,700 people are still missing.
