157 foreigners are awaiting repatriation in various prisons of the country after serving their sentences. This information is known from the report of the prison authorities submitted to the High Court.
Among them, 150 are Indian nationals, five are from Myanmar and one each from Pakistan and Nepal. Among the prisoners are 19 women. Most of these imprisoned foreign nationals have cases under the illegal entry and drug laws.
Deputy Attorney General Amit Dasgupta said that the report will be submitted in the form of an affidavit in the High Court bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Kazi Zeenat Haque.
Even if the sentence is severe, since they are citizens of other countries, they should contact their respective countries and return these people to their own countries, said the Deputy Attorney General.
According to the state side, even though the sentence is severe, these people have to be repatriated to their country in a process by contacting the concerned country as they are citizens of other countries.
It is also not possible to release them until that process is over.
