10 injured in post-election violence in Rupganj

At least 10 people were injured in the post-election violence of the 12th Parliament election in Rupganj, Narayanganj. The clash took place between the supporters of Awami League member of parliament Golam Dastgir Gazi (Bir Prateek) and independent candidate Shahjahan Bhuiyan at the Daudpur Union Parishad office of the upazila on Tuesday afternoon.

According to eyewitnesses, Golam Dastgir Gazi (hero symbol) candidate of the boat symbol defeated rival independent candidate Shahjahan Bhuiyan by a margin of 111,000 votes. Daudpur Union Parishad Chairman Nurul Islam Jahangir and his people worked on behalf of Shahjahan Bhuiyan.

On Tuesday, UP Chairman organized blanket distribution in Daudpur Union Parishad premises. At the same time, the local Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders and activists supported by Golam Dastgir organized a post-election discussion meeting at the local Awami League office in front of the gate of Daudpur Union Parishad. People from both sides started gathering at the same place side by side for two programs. At one point, tension broke out between the two sides. Later, people from both sides armed with sticks and indigenous weapons got into a clash. At one point, the attackers of one side ransacked the Union Parishad. At that time three motorcycles were set on fire. A few cocktail explosions and shootings also took place. At this time panic spread throughout the area. Later, law enforcement officials reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Purbachal fire service personnel came and extinguished the car fire.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rupganj police station Dipankar Chandra Saha said that after receiving the news of the clash, police and law enforcement officers reached the spot and brought the situation under control. At present the situation is normal. Additional police have been deployed at the scene.
