BGB arrested a smuggler named Atiyar Rahman (55) along with 20 gold bars worth Tk 2 crore from Benapole border while smuggling to India. He was arrested from the western neighborhood of Putkhali village on the Benapole border around 10:30 pm on Saturday.

Atiya is the son of Mahar Ali, a native of Putkhali village.

According to the BGB, on a tip-off that a large consignment of gold would be smuggled into India, around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, members of the patrol team of Putkhali BGB camp intercepted and interrogated the suspect who was heading towards the border on a bicycle. After searching his body, 20 pieces of gold bars were found wrapped with scotch tape in a novel technique.

He was arrested at that time. The weight of recovered gold is 2 kg 360 grams. The market value of which is 2 crore 12 lakh 52 thousand taka.

Khulna-21 BGB battalion captain Lt. Colonel Khurshid Anwar said that the recovered gold bars will be deposited in the treasury. The process of handing over the arrested trafficker to the police at Benapole Port Police Station is underway.

Police said Atiyar was handed over to Benapole Port Police Station on Sunday morning. The seized gold has been deposited with the Customs Treasury.
